Dr. Stahl Answers
My doctor said I have a leaky valve. Are there any minimally invasive procedures for heart valve surgery?

 

RUSSELL STAHL, MD
CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON

Dr. Stahl was born in Staten Island, New York and went through the New York City public school system. He won the N.Y.C. Touchdown Club Award as the outstanding scholar athlete in the City during his senior year in high school. Dr. Stahl subsequently graduated from Cornell University and New York University School of Medicine, where he was President of his class. He then completed nine years of training in general surgery and Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. During that time he became a member of AOA, the national medical honor society, and won the outstanding resident award. Dr. Stahl spent two years in the cardiothoracic research laboratory under the mentorship of Dr. Paul Addonizio, a nationally recognized expert on hemostatic abnormalities associated with cardiac surgery. Dr. Stahl then became an Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center where he was the Director of the Cardiothoracic Research Laboratory.

Dr. Stahl moved to Northeastern Pennsylvania when he was recruited to spearhead the new heart program at Community Medical Center in 1997. He was named Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery at CMC in 2000, and has continued to develop that program while recruiting 3 other surgeons to join his practice. Dr. Stahl has performed over 3,000 operations at CMC including more than 2,000 open heart procedures. He has championed the use of multiple arterial bypass grafts, minimally invasive valve surgery, atrial fibrillation ablation surgery, transmyocardial laser revascularization and laser assisted removal of cardiac devices in our region. A recognized leader in patient safety and quality improvement, Dr. Stahl is a member of the Technical Advisory Group of the Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council (PHC4) and has organized a regional symposium known as CATCH (Convergence Around Technologies for Cardiovascular Health), devoted to improving cardiovascular care in NEPA.

Rosiland (Roz) Stahl, Dr. Stahl’s wife, is an R.N. with a Masters degree in perioperative nursing, as well as an outstanding golfer. Between them, the Stahl’s have 5 children and 5 grandchildren. They reside in Clarks Summit, PA where they strive to support local charities and institutions.

Now a member of the Clinical Faculty of The Commonwealth Medical College, Dr. Stahl is committed to the training and retention of the next generation of physicians for our underserved area. Premiere Surgical is also deeply engaged in interprofessional education and training, involving nurses, pharmacists, physician assistants, residents and pre-medical students in their rounds, operating rooms, and clinical research. Dr. Stahl, along with many others, hopes to create a regional academic healthcare delivery system that emphasizes high value health care for the people of NEPA.

Dr. Mott Answers
I have an irregular heart rate called atrial fibrillation, are there other treatments besides medication?

BRIAN MOTT, MD
CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON

Dr. Mott received his Bachelors degree from McGill University in 1987. He also attended medical school at McGill and then did a residency and research fellowship at that prestigious university located in Montreal, Canada, which is Dr. Mott's hometown.

Dr. Mott went on to complete a residency in Cardiothoracic Surgery at Albany Medical College in 1999 and then received two additional years of fellowship training in adult cardiac surgery at The University of Toronto, under Dr. Tirone David and others.

Dr. Mott joined Premiere Surgical (formerly Cardiothoracic Surgery) in 2001. His areas of interest are valve surgery, thoracic oncology and VATS procedures.

Outside of work, he enjoys skiing and scuba diving. He and his wife, Carole, have two children.

Dr. Stivala Answers
I think I may have had a mini-stroke, what should I do?

CHARLES STIVALA, DO
CARDIOVASCULAR SURGEON

Dr. Stivala is a graduate of Temple University and the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. He did his general surgery residency at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, where he received several academic awards.

Dr. Stivala did a Cardiovascular residency at the State University of New York in Brooklyn and then spent a year as a vascular and thoracic surgeon in Luzerne County, before joining Premiere Surgical in September 2004. Dr. Stivala is board certified in cardiovascular surgery.

Dr. Stivala's interests include cardiac, vascular and thoracic surgery, including the latest minimally invasive and endovascular techniques.

He has one child.

Dr. Smeraldi Answers
What are the treatments options for aortic aneurysms?

ALESSANDRO SMERALDI, MD
ENDOVASCULAR SURGEON

Dr. Smeraldi was born in New York City in 1972 and attended Swarthmore College and Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his residency in general surgery at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, NJ in 2003 and completed a two year fellowship in vascular & endovascular surgery at Staten Island University Hospital in 2005.

During his fellowship, Dr. Smeraldi received extensive training in open and minimally invasive vascular procedures.

He is an author of a number of publications regarding the latest techniques in vascular surgery. He is board certified in vascular surgery.

His wife, Gail, is a podiatrist and they have two children.
